Definition and Examples of Epideictic Rhetoric

Epideictic  rhetoric (or epideictic oratory) is ceremonial discourse:  speech or writing that praises or blames (someone or something). According to Aristotle, epideictic  rhetoric (or epideictic oratory) is one of the three major branches of rhetoric. Also known as  demonstrative rhetoric  and ceremonial discourse, epideictic rhetoric includes funeral orations, obituaries, graduation and retirement speeches, letters of recommendation, and nominating speeches at political conventions. Interpreted more broadly, epideictic rhetoric may also include works of literature. In his recent study of epideictic rhetoric (Epideictic Rhetoric: Questioning the Stakes of Ancient Praise, 2015),  Laurent Pernot notes that since the time of Aristotle, epideictic has been a loose term: The field of epideictic rhetoric seems vague and laden with poorly resolved ambiguities. To categorize speeches aimed at praise and blame rather than at decision-making, speeches such as funeral orations and encomia or panegyrics, Aristotle devised the technical term epideictic. [The epideictic style] indulges in a neatness and symmetry of sentences, and is allowed to use well-defined and rounded periods; the ornamentation is done of set purpose, with no attempt at concealment, but openly and avowedly . . ..The epideictic oration, then, has a sweet, fluent and copious style, with bright conceits and sounding phrases. Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is one of the largest universities in Tennessee; however, they do not offer enough housing to provide for all of their students. As a result, students are expected to find their own housing off-campus. Hence, students must live in off-campus apartment complexes that are expensive, too far away, and difficult for young students to rent. While there are some benefits to off-campus housing, students face many problems in securing these types of housing situations. The prices of off-campus housing are high and the locations are often too far away from campus to walk. In addition, many apartment complexes do not want young, college-aged people living there. The main problem for students at MTSU is that there simply is not enough on-campus housing available. Although the student population has grown steadily over the past several years, the university has not added on-campus housing options for those students. Because of that, students are forced into seeking other options. The hand that signed the paper Essay Thomas reiterates the power of the hand with this final line in stanza three, Great is the hand that holds dominion over / Man by a scribbled name. Thomas is revealing that his hand works with anyone with authority. It is possible that a single signature could control millions of lives. This could refer to either the initiation of the conflict or the resolution. The final stanza pursues the history of the war. The five kings count the dead. The poems narrative through battle, diplomacy, aftereffect and chronicle serves to provide a linear temporality to the poem which in turn heightens the poems effect. To have a recognizable and relatable course of events helps to ground the work in a familiar reality. Thomas is offering a mirror in this poem which Britain and the United States in particular are invited to look into. It is prescient writing for 1933, and Dylan Thomas would have to have been tuned in to understand the consequence of history. The further capitulation by Britain to Germany after this poem was written would ignite a Second World War that had already been fueled by two decades of social and economic anxiety. Thomas traces that anxiety to five kings crippling a sixth. An aspect of the poem that I feel I am not capable of doing justice with this particular essay is Thomas unique use of sound and rhyme. Thomas would become famous for his musicality, and his deft use of that talent in this particular poem elicits a surreal beauty. There are elements of alliteration present as well as a strange yet comfortable meter. It is comfortable in the sense that the rhythm of syllables is never jarring. What I sought to accomplish with this paper was, to provide a meaning and a foundation for the poem. Of Mice And Men By Steinbeck Success Title: Of mice and men Author: John Stienbeck Category: Fiction Author John Stienbeck was born in Salinas, California in 1902. His first three books were financial failures and he worked at various kinds of jobs to survive, including fruit picking. His first success was Tortilla Flat in 1935 which was followed by a number of shorter works, leading up to his great masterpiece The Grapes of Wrath which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1940. In 1962, Stienbeck became the sixth American to win the Nobel Prize for literature. He died at his home in New York on December 1968. I found the writing style of this book to be really slack and basic. The English in this book was elementary, very easy to understand and follow. There were definitely no metaphors or similes. The only figures of speech I could find were when he describing the landscape at the very beginning. For the exception of the description at the first, the entire book was straight dialogue between the characters in the novel. One thing the novel was full of though was local color and jargon. Throughout the book he wrote and spelled words as if they would have been said them. He also added expressions and local slang to add to the atmosphere of the novel. I don't really have any major likes or dislikes to the novel. I would have to say I liked it tough. There was no complex plot to figure out or involved characters to understand. The book just told a story. It didn't even explain the thoughts or get involved in the feelings of the characters. They only thing you know is what is spoken aloud. I somewhat feel the author could have done more with the story expand on it or go further into detail of what happened during the story but even though it was so short I still think it is a good book. The novel takes place during the early 40's in the United States. It is based on a fictional story of two men who travel from state, working on ranches and scrounging for money. One of men named Lennie was mentally retarded but incredibly strong. The second, George was explained as Lennie's friend who takes the responsibility of keeping his friend, Lennie out of trouble. The story starts out with the two main characters walking down a dirt road toward their next job. They realized they couldn't make the trip so they decided to spend the night by the river. That night we learn for the first time about one of the major themes of the novel. As George and Lennie sit at the campfire, George tells a story about their dream. He explained in detail about how they were now, that they have no home, anywhere that they belong and that all that they really want is a place to themselves. A place where they could live without anyone bothering them. We only realize later that this place really does exist but it costs too much money than they can afford alone but with the help of an older man who has money saved they realize their dream may happen. Soon after the old man's dog has to be put down, he argues with the other men not to shoot the dog but finally agrees that he must be put down. The story continues with little else happening before the climax. The characters contiune interacting with each other and a few minor incidents happen before the climax. At the climax the main character Lennie who is unweary of his strenght accidently kills someone when he got scared. This killing brings on a mob of men who are set out to kill Lennie for his crime. For example, having AP Japanese or AP Research under your belt can set you apart from other high-achieving students, especially in college applications. AP Test Passing Rates In addition to knowing all your AP exam choices and how popular each test is, it’s helpful to know how many students pass each exam. (AP tests are scored between 1 and 5, with anything 3 and higher considered passing.) Most AP tests have a pass rate of around 65% or higher. The high score of 5 is rarer- usually between 10% and 20% of a test's scores. Check out our table below, organized in order of the passing rate of each exam. Note: There are two different subgroups for language exams: Standard and Total. It's not because they're the easiest AP tests. These tests have high pass rates because students who take AP Calculus BC and AP Chinese are much more likely to have prior experience in those subjects and are willing to take on a tough class. In other words, the students who take the hardest AP exams are a self-selecting group of high achievers. It takes years of math classes to build up to Calculus BC questions like this one. On the flip side, some of the most popular tests, such as US History and US Government, have some of the lowest passing rates. This is likely because a wider pool of test takers means that there are more underprepared and unprepared students. In addition, note that Environmental Science, English Literature, and World History- also very popular tests- have very low 5 rates, under 10%. This could be because, again, a wider test taker pool makes for more unprepared students. However, since so few students can pull it off, it’s still pretty hard to get a 5 on these tests.
